Ergonomics and Human Factors Engineering (HFE) seek to improve the physical and cognitive usability of the processes and tools we use to get our jobs done. Ergonomics and HFE can have a very wide variety of applications. We may look at:

• The process flow on a production line
• The usability of software
• The usability of a specific tool or workstation
• The layout and equipment in an office workstation
• The internal operating systems of an organization
• The decision-making hierarchy when a fast response is needed
